How do strip boards work:

A stripboard is a prototype circuit board made from an insulating material with copper strips on the underside. The prototype has to be hard-wired, which means that each connection must be soldered by hand, one wire at a time.

In the past:

Prototype boards were made from a material known as bakelite, which is now difficult to obtain. Bakelite has been replaced by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), more commonly called Teflon®. A stripboard consists of two layers of insulating plastic with copper strips glued on one side and cuts into lengths so that they can be easily inserted between holes in the opposite layer when required for connection purposes. This method allows any point within the circuit to be connected regardless of where it lies on either side of the board or whether there are other components already installed there. Solder links then connect each hole at each end to its counterpart across the width of the copper track thus making complete electrical contact along both sides of the prototype board.

To use a stripboard:

You need to first identify the points in your circuit that require connection and then lay out the track layout on the prototype board using a pencil. Once happy with the arrangement, it can be permanently drawn onto the board by soldering all of the joints. Strip boards are available in different sizes and shapes but always have a series of parallel tracks running down their length. The spacing between these tracks is usually 0.635mm (0.025in), which is also known as single-track pitch or standard pitch. Larger boards may have two or more strips of tracks side by side, while smaller ones may only have one or two tracks spaced further apart.

Strip boards are a very cheap and easy way of constructing prototype circuit boards, but the downside is that they can be quite time-consuming to wire up. In addition, it can be difficult to get a good soldering joint on the tracks due to their close spacing. For these reasons, strip boards are not usually used for producing finished or production-quality circuits. Instead, they are more commonly used as a means of quickly prototyping new designs before moving onto a more permanent PCB solution.
